Heroku Postgres continuous protection persists incremental snapshots (or base backups) and Write-Ahead Log (WAL) files to AWS S3, enabling full database reconstruction after hardware failure or data corruption. WAL files are pushed to S3 as soon as Postgres makes them available, and all plan tiers share a 60-second WAL archival cadence that establishes the RPO.
