Explainer

A lookup in the middle of a flow, such as a database Select or a call to another flow, normally replaces the current payload with its result. A target variable stores that result in a variable instead, so the payload you already had keeps moving through the flow. You then combine the two in DataWeave: read the stored result through vars, and join it to payload with tools such as the ++ function.
Core information
  • Normally, an operation outputs a different message than it receives. When you set the Target (target) parameter on a non-void operation, the operation stores its result in a variable, and the next component receives the same message the operation received. For example, in a flow of component A, then component B with a target, then component C, C gets the message that B got from A.
More details and nuances
  • Target Value accepts payload, attributes, message, any supported data type and DataWeave expressions, but not the keyword vars. Target names can include only numbers, characters and underscores, so a hyphen in the name is not allowed.
