Apex server-side controllers return data to client-side controllers using the return statement, provided the data is serializable into JSON format. When returning custom Apex classes, only public properties and methods annotated with @AuraEnabled are included in the serialized response. This mechanism supports primitives, sObjects, and collections like Lists and Maps containing these types.
