Level of detail in Tableau defines the granularity of your analysis based on the dimensions placed in your view. When you add dimensions, Tableau partitions the underlying data and recalculates aggregated measures at that new, more specific breakdown. This directly controls how many marks appear in your visualization and what each mark represents.
