Dimensions are fields Tableau uses to categorize, group, or segment data rather than calculate with them. By default, Tableau classifies fields containing qualitative or categorical information as dimensions, which determine the level of detail in your visualizations.

Tableau automatically assigns the dimension role to fields that hold qualitative or categorical values, such as text, names, geographical locations, and Boolean (true/false) entries.

Unlike measures, Tableau does not apply mathematical aggregations to dimensions by default, so they cannot be summed or averaged directly.
