Authentication verifies who a user or system is, while authorization determines what that verified identity is allowed to access or do. In API and enterprise security, authentication establishes trust through credentials or tokens, and authorization enforces access limits based on roles, permissions, or sharing rules. Both work together to ensure only the right identities interact with the right resources.
