A Tableau Next semantic model can be built directly on a Tableau Published Data Source (PDS) in Tableau Cloud, so a company can reuse its existing Tableau data definitions instead of rebuilding them. The PDS remains the source of the field definitions and the place where queries run, and no data or metadata is migrated. Before you can connect a PDS, a Salesforce admin and a Tableau admin must set up trust between the Salesforce org and the Tableau Cloud site.
Core information
  • A semantic model created from a PDS lives in the Data 360 Semantic Layer. The PDS in Tableau Cloud acts as the model's external data definition and query source. This lets teams explore their existing Tableau content in Tableau Next without any data or metadata migration. The feature is available to Tableau Next customers only.
More details and nuances
  • The semantic model queries the PDS using the mapped Tableau user identity, and it respects any row-level security defined in the PDS. The identity mapping in Tableau Embedding decides whose Tableau access applies to each query.
