Tableau Next has its own developer tools, and they are separate from the long-standing APIs built for Tableau Server and Tableau Cloud. The Tableau Next tools work with content that lives in a Salesforce org, such as workspaces, visualizations, dashboards, metrics and semantic models, and they use Salesforce authentication and REST conventions. The Tableau tools manage and extend Tableau Server and Tableau Cloud sites and their content.
Core information
  • Tableau Next developer tools fall into three groups. The MCP server is the Tableau Next MCP server. The APIs are the Tableau Next REST API, the Tableau Semantics APIs and the App Template Framework. The SDK is the Tableau Next Embedding SDK.
More details and nuances
  • The Tableau Next REST API requires Tableau Next to be provisioned and set up in the org. The calling user needs a Tableau Next Creator license and either the Tableau Next Admin or the Tableau Next Platform Analyst permission set.
