Explainer

Tableau Server has two different ways to take it off a computer. Uninstalling removes one installed version, usually an old version after an upgrade, to free disk space. Completely removing uses the tableau-server-obliterate script to wipe every version, plus data and configuration, so the computer returns to a pre-Tableau state and you can do a clean reinstall.
Core information
  • Starting with version 2018.2, you can have multiple versions of Tableau Server installed at the same time, but only one version runs. You can run most of an upgrade while the old version keeps serving users, which reduces downtime.
More details and nuances
  • Beginning with version 2018.2, uninstalling Tableau Server does not create a backup of your data. As a best practice, always create a backup before you upgrade, uninstall or remove Tableau. Save it to a safe location on a computer that is not part of your Tableau Server installation.
