Explainer

When a workbook is saved in a newer version of Tableau Desktop, older versions of Tableau Desktop can no longer open it. Downgrading saves the workbook in an older version's format, so people using older Tableau products, including an older Tableau Server, can still use it. The cost is that any feature the older version does not support is removed.
Core information
  • Opening and saving a workbook or data source in an upgraded version of Tableau Desktop upgrades it, and new workbooks created in that version use the newer format too. Older versions of Tableau Desktop can't open these files unless you downgrade the workbook first.
More details and nuances
  • The earliest version you can export to from Tableau Desktop, or download to from Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud, is Tableau Desktop 10.5.
