On Tableau Server, admins can connect directly to the PostgreSQL repository database and build their own monitoring and usage reports. Tableau Cloud does not allow direct access to its repository. A client moving to Tableau Cloud rebuilds that monitoring in Admin Insights, a Tableau Cloud-only project of curated data sources and a starter workbook, and adds Activity Log when it needs detailed event auditing.
Core information
  • On Tableau Server, the customer manages observability data. Admins build custom administrative views by connecting to the PostgreSQL repository database, or by using Tableau Server Insights, a set of curated data sources downloaded from GitHub.
More details and nuances
  • Admin Insights does not replace the default admin views on the site Status page; you use both. Admin Insights covers site traffic, adoption, reach, user roles, sign-in activity, and publishing activity. Admin views cover general site activity, site performance, disk space usage, extract performance, Tableau Bridge traffic and extract activity, and troubleshooting.
