Cache Server is the Tableau Server process that keeps a shared external query cache. The cache holds key/value pairs from previous queries so future requests are faster. When many users open views at once, VizQL Server calls on this cache often, so a consultant may add Cache Server instances and spread them across nodes, within a firm upper limit.
Core information
  • Cache Server stores information from previous queries as key/value pairs in a cache that the whole server shares. A later request can use a cached result instead of waiting for the query to rerun, which speeds up views for end users.
More details and nuances
  • A Cache Server outage is a performance problem, not an availability problem. Tableau Server keeps working, but actions take longer because cached results are not available. As queries rerun, the restarted Cache Server repopulates and things speed up again.
