Next conceptTable calculation filters that hide marks without changing results

Explainer

A percent-of-total value divides one category's amount by a grand total. In Tableau, filtering a category out of the view can quietly shrink that total, because filters and calculations run in a fixed sequence called the order of operations. Where the total is calculated in that sequence decides whether the percentages recalculate or hold steady.
Core information
  • Tableau runs filters in this order: extract filters, data source filters, context filters, dimension filters (on the Filters shelf or in filter cards), then measure filters. Table calculation filters are applied last.
More details and nuances
  • With the FIXED version, a dimension filter changes only the numerator. For example, if some states are filtered out, each remaining state's sales are still divided by total sales for all states, including the hidden ones.
