Tableau provides two methods for connecting to data sources: live connections and data extracts. A live connection queries the source database directly in real time, while an extract copies a compressed snapshot of the data into Tableau’s local in-memory engine. Selecting the appropriate method depends on balancing query performance, data freshness, and the operational cost or resource load placed on the underlying data warehouse.
