Tableau forecasting uses exponential smoothing to project future values by identifying repeating patterns in historical measures. The algorithm automatically tests multiple models to find the best fit for both directional trends and seasonal cycles. A minimum of five data points is required to enable trend estimation, with more needed for seasonal modeling.
