Groups and aliases both help clean up how the members of a dimension show up in Tableau, but they do different jobs. A group combines several members of a field into one member, such as merging "CA", "Calif." and "California" into a single data point. An alias gives a member of a discrete dimension an alternate name, so its label reads differently in the view.
