A combined set is a new set that Tableau builds from two existing sets so you can compare their members. It answers cohort questions such as "how many customers who bought last year also bought this year?" It does this by keeping all members, only the shared members, or the members that are in one set but not the other.

  • A set is a custom field that defines a subset of data based on some conditions. Sets appear at the bottom of the Data pane in the Sets section. A combined set is also a set, so you can drag it into the view like any other field.
More details and nuances
  • Both sets must be based on the same dimensions. You can combine a top customers set with a set of customers who purchased last year. You cannot combine a top customers set with a top products set.
