Explainer

Tableau has three spatial functions that turn geographic shapes into numbers. DISTANCE measures how far apart two points are, LENGTH measures how long a line is, and AREA measures the surface area of a polygon. Each one takes spatial values plus a unit name and returns a plain Number, such as how far a warehouse is from a shipping hub.
Core information
  • DISTANCE(SpatialPoint1, SpatialPoint2, 'units') returns the distance between two points in the unit you name. For example, DISTANCE([Origin Point],[Destination Point], 'km') measures each origin-to-destination trip. A typical use is finding how far a warehouse is from a shipping hub, so you can flag shipments that exceed a "local" shipping rate.
More details and nuances
  • DISTANCE can only be created on a live connection. A DISTANCE calculation you have already created keeps working if the data source is later converted to an extract.
