Explainer

A spatial join combines two data sources by where their rows sit in space, not by matching values like an ID. If one source is a spatial file (such as district boundaries) and the other is ordinary data with latitude and longitude columns (such as a spreadsheet of pothole reports), you can use MAKEPOINT inside the join to turn those coordinates into points. Tableau then matches each point to the shapes it intersects.
Core information
  • There are two ways to build a spatial join. You can join two spatial files on their spatial fields (geography or geometry), or you can use a spatial calculation to join a spatial file with non-spatial data that has latitude and longitude fields. MAKEPOINT is the calculation for the second case.
More details and nuances
  • The join clause operator is Intersects, which matches rows whose geometries overlap in space, not rows with equal values. The INTERSECTS function returns true or false for the same test and supports point/polygon, line/polygon and polygon/polygon.
