Slack gives you three ways to build automation and apps: Workflow Builder (no code), the Deno Slack SDK (code), and the Bolt framework (code). The biggest difference between them is hosting. Bolt apps run on infrastructure you host yourself, while Deno Slack SDK apps and Workflow Builder workflows are hosted by Slack, and that choice shapes the plan you need, the languages you can use, where data lives, and how you can distribute the app.
Core information
  • The main split is hosting. Bolt apps are self-hosted, so you choose where to deploy and run them. Deno Slack SDK apps and Workflow Builder workflows are Slack-hosted, so Slack runs the code and manages the data.
More details and nuances
  • Custom workflow steps follow the same hosting split. Steps built with the Deno Slack SDK and the Slack CLI are Slack-hosted, and steps built with Bolt are self-hosted. Both kinds can be made available as steps in Workflow Builder.
