A sandbox is a copy of a Salesforce organization in a separate environment that teams use for development, testing, and training. Production and every sandbox are independent orgs: work in a sandbox does not change production, and production customizations and data do not appear in a sandbox until you create or refresh it. Salesforce offers four sandbox types that copy different amounts of configuration and data, refresh on different schedules, and include different storage, so mapping a customer's landscape means identifying production plus which of those isolated copies they actually have.
