Discovery is the information-gathering phase when a business analyst does most of a project's groundwork: you find out what the business needs from the people who decide priorities and who live the processes. You plan those activities around the stakeholders you target, because executives, staff, customers, and other interested parties hold different facts and different levels of influence. Without that information, you cannot form the best conclusions or move the project toward a solution.
