Application lifecycle management (ALM) is the governance and change-management framework that defines what Salesforce changes go in, when they go in, and how they get there. Business analysts apply that lifecycle when they plan analysis work: they capture requirements as user stories, line up the right sandboxes, and schedule testing so every change is traced and validated before production. Building directly in the live org is generally unsafe because even a small untested change can disrupt processes or data.
