A Salesforce edition is the org-wide package that decides which features exist and how much of each the customer is granted. A user license then gives each person a single baseline of access, and feature licenses, permission set licenses, or usage-based entitlements can add capabilities that user license does not include. In customer discovery, edition and licenses are the constraints that tell you whether a recommended process can run in the current org or needs a different assignment or a purchase.

Core information
  • Think of edition as what the org can do and licenses as what each person is allowed to reach: the edition affects which features and functionality are available, and allocations are the amounts granted based on the edition the customer purchased.
More details and nuances
  • For an existing user, you change the user license by editing the user's profile. Changing the license also removes any permission sets and permission set licenses currently assigned to them.
