The Apex flex queue is a holding area for batch Apex jobs that are waiting because the org already has as much batch work in flight as it can process. Those jobs sit in Holding until the system takes them from the top of the flex queue and moves them into the batch job queue. You can leave that order as first-in, first-out or reorder Holding jobs in Setup or with System.FlexQueue so a higher-priority job runs next.

  • You can place up to 100 batch jobs in a Holding status in the Apex flex queue; the Apex Flex Queue page lists those jobs and shows the job ID, submission date, and Apex class.
More details and nuances
  • In the Salesforce user interface the job at the top of the flex queue is position 1, but when you work with the flex queue in Apex the first position is index 0, so FlexQueue.moveJobToFront moves a job to index 0 and all other jobs move back one spot.
