Formula fields automatically calculate a value from other fields, expressions, or values. Roll-up summary fields put a count, sum, minimum, or maximum from related detail records onto the master record in a master-detail relationship. Use those declarative calculations when the relationship and field types fit; use Apex when you need multi-object validation, logic over the whole transaction, or in-code formula evaluation without extra DML.
