In Lightning Experience, Visualforce no longer owns the browser window. The Lightning Experience app at /lightning is a single-page application that hosts each Visualforce page inside an iframe, so Lightning Experience is the parent context and your page is the child. Server-side PageReference navigation still works, but JavaScript that used to drive the whole window must fire Lightning Experience navigation events instead of setting window.location.

  • In Salesforce Classic, Visualforce is the application container: it owns the page, the request, and the environment. In Lightning Experience, Visualforce runs inside an HTML iframe wrapped by that larger Lightning Experience container.
More details and nuances
  • Lightning Experience always suppresses the Salesforce Classic header and sidebar. The showHeader and sidebar attributes of apex:page behave as if they were false and cannot hide Lightning Experience chrome; there are no attributes for that. You can still set those attributes for Classic, and the standardStylesheets attribute still defaults to true and can be changed.
