On the Lightning Platform, user interfaces separate the markup a person sees from the logic that loads data and reacts to clicks. Visualforce does that work on the server: a controller supplies data to page markup, and the platform renders HTML before the browser displays it. Lightning web components keep a similar split, but the browser generates the UI from JavaScript and calls the server only when it needs Salesforce data.

Controllers also provide access to the data that should be displayed and can modify component behavior.

  • Visualforce uses view state to maintain state between server requests, including recreating the page and passing state to different pages in wizards and guided workflows. Lightning web component server requests are stateless, so every Apex call must pass all information the method needs and the method must return all information the component needs.
