A self relationship links records of the same object so related items of that type can be seen together, such as two bugs on the same problem or two similar job positions. You create it as a lookup from the object to itself. The User object is different: it uses a hierarchical relationship, a special lookup that can store each user's manager and that cannot refer back to the same user directly or indirectly.

  • A self relationship is a lookup that links an object with itself. For example, a custom Bug object can look up another Bug to show that two bugs relate to the same problem, and a Position can look up a Related Position so recruiters can identify other open positions with similar skills or job descriptions.

  • In a self relationship, a single record cannot be linked to itself, but a record can still relate to itself indirectly. For example, the Holiday Promotion campaign can select the Direct Mail campaign, and Direct Mail can select Holiday Promotion.
