Coverage is a count of executable lines that tests actually ran, plus a separate rule that every trigger has at least some coverage. The 75% figure is an org-wide average, so it gates deployment rather than proving that tests assert the right behavior.

  • Before Apex can be deployed to production, unit tests must cover at least 75% of the Apex code and all of those tests must complete successfully. Every trigger must have some test coverage, and all classes and triggers must compile successfully.
More details and nuances
  • Coverage is computed from the total number of code lines in the organization, so adding or deleting lines changes the percentage. If 50 lines are covered and you add a 50-line trigger with no tests, coverage drops from 100% to 50%. Deploying new components that have 100% coverage still fails when the average of the new and existing code is below 75%.
