Apex unit tests are methods that verify whether a particular piece of code is working properly. They take no arguments, commit no data to the database, and live in classes marked @IsTest. Salesforce expects more than a happy-path check: positive tests confirm expected results with valid input, negative tests confirm that limits and invalid input produce the right errors, and bulk tests confirm the same logic still holds when many records run in one invocation.

  • A unit test is an @IsTest method in an @IsTest class. Salesforce recommends @IsTest rather than the older testMethod keyword, which may be versioned out in a future release.

  • Conditional and ternary operators are not considered executed unless both the positive and negative branches run, so a test that only exercises the success path leaves the other branch uncovered.
