An external ID is a custom text, number, or email field that stores an identifier from a system outside Salesforce so you can find a record without using Salesforce's own Id. Upsert is one DML statement that inserts when that key is new and updates when the key matches exactly one existing row. Developers use external IDs to keep records in sync with fewer DML statements and to attach a child to a parent by the parent's external ID instead of the parent's Salesforce Id.

  • In the user interface you identify one custom field on an object as an external ID; it must be text, number, or email, and you match against it when upserting records.
More details and nuances
  • If the field used for matching does not have the Unique attribute set, the context user must have the View All Records object-level permission on the target object or the View All Data permission so upsert does not accidentally insert a duplicate.
