Triggers expose implicit System.Trigger variables so Apex can see which DML event fired, whether it ran before or after save, and which records are in the current invocation. Record lists and ID maps are not present in every event: Trigger.new exists only for insert, update, and undelete; Trigger.old exists only for update and delete; Trigger.newMap is narrower still. Using a missing variable or changing records outside the allowed event throws a runtime error.
