A SOQL for loop walks every sObject a query returns without first loading the entire result into a list. A standard Apex SOQL query in square brackets can evaluate to a list, a single sObject, or a COUNT() Integer, but assigning a huge result to a list can exceed heap size and throw a runtime exception. For loops retrieve all matching records in chunks through the SOAP API query and queryMore methods so you can process many rows with less heap, at the cost of more CPU.

Core information
  • Surrounding SOQL in square brackets in Apex evaluates to a list of sObjects, a single sObject, or an Integer for COUNT() queries, so a list query such as Account[] accts = [SELECT Id FROM Account] loads matching records into memory at once.
More details and nuances
  • Queries that include an aggregate function do not support queryMore, and a run-time exception occurs if such a query returns more than 2,000 rows in a for loop.
