Apex triggers can run more than once for the same records before a save commits, because later automation and related-record updates send records through the save procedure again. Salesforce treats some of those later passes as recursive saves and skips a stretch of later automation so the cascade is not a full replay. You stop extra trigger work with static variables on a class: they keep their values for one Apex transaction and reset when that transaction ends.
