A callout is Apex reaching an external web service or API. A trigger cannot make that request in the same transaction as the save that fired it, because the platform would hold a database connection open for the entire round trip. Queue a future method or a Queueable job instead so the callout runs later in its own thread.

  • If you are making callouts from a trigger or after performing a DML operation, you must use a future method or Queueable Apex. A synchronous callout is not allowed in those situations.
More details and nuances
  • Future methods are not guaranteed to execute in the same order they were called, and two can run at the same time, which can lock the same record and cause a runtime error.
