When Salesforce saves a record, workflow can change field values after the first database write. Those field updates send the record through another pass of part of the save sequence, so before-update and after-update Apex triggers can run again in the same transaction. If the field update is set to reevaluate workflow rules, the new values can fire more workflow rules and cascade further field updates.

  • On insert, update, or upsert, Salesforce runs a fixed save sequence: before-save record-triggered flows and before triggers, validation, a database write that is not committed yet, after triggers, then assignment rules, auto-response rules, and workflow rules.
More details and nuances
  • When a process or flow executes a DML operation, the affected record goes through the save procedure. During a recursive save, Salesforce skips assignment rules through the grandparent roll-up summary field update.
