Lightning Web Components is Salesforce's newer Lightning UI programming model: custom HTML elements built on W3C Web Components and modern JavaScript so more work runs natively in the browser. Salesforce created it to align with web standards that did not exist when Aura was built, which is why Lightning web components perform better and are easier to develop than Aura components. For new work, always choose Lightning Web Components unless you need a feature it does not support, and prefer Lightning Experience low-code tools and Lightning web components over Visualforce.

  • Salesforce offers two Lightning programming models: Aura Components (the original) and Lightning Web Components (the newer model). Lightning Web Components exists because web standards such as HTML templates, custom elements, and Web Components were not available when Aura was designed.
More details and nuances
  • Lightning web components do not yet support everything Aura does, so you may still need Aura. To use an unsupported experience, feature, or interface, develop a Lightning web component and wrap it in an Aura component that only accesses that gap.
