An Apex transaction is a set of database operations that succeed or fail together, so related changes cannot be saved only halfway. If any operation in the unit errors, Salesforce undoes every change from that unit and commits nothing. The unit lasts until the trigger, class method, anonymous block, Visualforce page, or custom Web service method that started it finishes.

Core information
  • An Apex transaction is a single unit of work: every DML operation in it must complete successfully, or the entire transaction is rolled back and no data is committed to the database. The same unit is sometimes called an execution context.
More details and nuances
  • Payment transactions are the exception to DML-error rollback: even if an error occurs, data is committed and payment records are generated because the payment already happened at the payment gateway.
