Upsert is an Apex Data Manipulation Language (DML) operation that creates new records and updates existing ones in a single statement. It decides which path to take by matching on a field you specify, often a custom external ID, or on the Salesforce record ID if you specify none. Using upsert with an external ID can reduce the number of DML statements in your code and help you avoid governor limits.

  • Unlike insert, which only adds records, or update, which only changes existing records, upsert creates new sObject records and updates existing ones in one statement, using a specified field to detect existing objects, or the ID field if no field is specified.
More details and nuances
  • Each upsert statement is two operations, one insert and one update, and each is subject to the insert and update runtime limits. You can pass a maximum of 10,000 sObject records to a single insert or update, so upserting more than 10,000 records that are all being updated returns an error.
