Salesforce is multitenant: many organizations share one hardware and software stack, and an invisible platform layer keeps each org's data and schema isolated. Governor limits are the Apex runtime's caps on how much of those shared resources one unit of work may use, so one tenant cannot starve the others. Most caps apply to a single Apex transaction; if code exceeds one, the platform throws a runtime exception that cannot be handled.

Salesforce inserts a software layer so each organization sees only its own data and schemas, stores tenant application data in a few large database tables partitioned by tenant, and materializes virtual tables at runtime from metadata about objects, fields, and relationships.

  • A DML statement inside a for loop counts once per record. Updating 151 line items one at a time exceeds the 150 DML statement limit and throws the unhandleable exception; add the changed records to a list and call update once on that list.
