Lightning Platform serializes Apex member values so a Visualforce page can restore view state across requests, and Apex can serialize objects into JSON and deserialize that JSON back into objects. The transient keyword excludes a member from that save, so the value exists only for the current request and is not stored in view state. Use transient in serializable classes such as controllers, controller extensions, and Batchable or Schedulable classes when a field is needed during the request but should not be saved.

  • To maintain a Visualforce page's view state, Lightning Platform stores the state of components, field values, and the controller as an encrypted string in a hidden form element. That view state is limited to 170 KB, and a large view state slows each request because of serialization, deserialization, encryption, and decryption time.
More details and nuances
  • System.JSONParser is not serializable. A serializable class such as a Visualforce controller cannot have a JSONParser member variable; use a local variable in the method instead.
