Hybrid reasoning is how an Agentforce agent follows fixed business rules and still converses with a language model in the same turn. You write those rules in Agent Script, the language of Agentforce Builder, mixing if/else logic, stored variables, and ordered actions with natural-language instructions the LLM may interpret. The mix exists so agents stay predictable on process without giving up flexible conversation.

  • The Atlas reasoning engine is graph-based, a flowchart of nodes, variables, and transitions, so agents follow specific, predictable paths. Unlike strictly prompt-based engines, Atlas separates the agent's big-picture workflow from its conversational skills and uses Agent Script to combine programmatic expressions with natural-language instructions. That combination is hybrid reasoning: deterministic, rules-based execution and probabilistic LLM reasoning in the same engine.
More details and nuances
  • The same controls are expressed differently before reasoning and during it. Inline actions in reasoning instructions (conditionals, transitions, set variable, run action) run before any LLM call. In actions available for reasoning, use a utility to transition, escalate, or set a variable, a follow-up action to run another action after the LLM chooses, and filters to hide a subagent or action until a condition is met.
