Grant Access Using Hierarchies is a Sharing Settings option that decides whether people higher in the role hierarchy automatically receive custom-object records that users below them own or can already see. It exists so managers get visibility into their reports' data without extra sharing rules. You can enable or disable it only on custom objects.
