By default, Salesforce accounts are business accounts that store companies or other entities. Person accounts extend that model so you can store individual consumers by combining certain account fields and contact fields into one record, and both types can be used in the same org. The two types are not interchangeable: person accounts change sharing, hierarchy, and related-record behavior, and once you enable them you cannot turn them off.
