Debug logs are a filtered recording of what Salesforce did during a transaction: whether it succeeded, how long it took, and which database, validation, and automation steps ran. You turn them on with a trace flag, a timed setting that names who or what to watch and how much detail to keep, then reproduce the issue and read the log. Administrators use them when a user reports an unexpected result or when a process did not fire or ran in an unexpected order.
