A field filter keeps or drops rows by testing a field already in the report against an operator and a value. A cross filter includes or excludes those primary records based on related child objects, using WITH or WITHOUT, so you can do exception reporting, such as contacts without accounts, without formulas or code. You can use a cross filter on its own or together with field filters, including subfilters on the child object’s fields.
