My Domain is the org-specific subdomain in Salesforce login URLs, such as https://mycompany.my.salesforce.com, so users authenticate on a host that belongs to that org instead of only shared Salesforce login pages. Login policies let an administrator require people and SOAP API clients to sign in through that My Domain URL rather than generic hosts such as https://login.salesforce.com. Tightening those policies adds an extra layer of org-specific security, while a few SSO paths still use login.salesforce.com on purpose.
