Duplicate rules run in the record save sequence after before-save automation and validation, which is the last point that can stop a duplicate before later automation. When a rule identifies a duplicate and uses Block, Salesforce does not save the record and does not run later steps such as after triggers and workflow rules. When the rule alerts instead of blocking, the user can still save the duplicate, and later automation continues.

Core information
  • When a record is saved, Salesforce runs before-save record-triggered flows, then before triggers, then most system validation and custom validation rules, then duplicate rules.
More details and nuances
  • If more than one duplicate rule is active on an object, the first rule that finds a match causes later rules to skip that record, so place Block rules before Allow or alert rules when blocking must win.
