Merging duplicate records combines matching leads, accounts, or contacts into one surviving record, called the principal, so teams work from clean data they can trust and the org can work toward data-protection and privacy rules. Salesforce finds those matches with matching rules that duplicate rules and duplicate jobs specify, then lists them in duplicate record sets you merge one at a time or after an org-wide job. Records you do not keep go to the Recycle Bin, while related items, sharing, and history follow the principal except for a few feed and date rules.
